Over his career, he served in various capacities including District Collector, Deputy Municipal Commissioner, Joint Secretary, Director, Secretary, Principal Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary, and Chief Secretary to the Government. He was Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister on multiple occasions. From April 1, 2005, to March 31, 2008, he was Chairman and Managing Director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) in Gujarat.
