Union Minister Pralhad Joshi To Take Over As Next Education Minister

Within hours of Pradhan’s resignation, the Narendra Modi government announced the appointment of Joshi, who is already in charge of the critical Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) along with Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Joshi has been now given additional charge of the Ministry of Education.

President Droupadi Murmu formally accepted the resignation of Pradhan and gave the charge of the Ministry to Joshi.

In a press communiqué the Rashtrapati Bhawan said, “The President of India, as advised by the Prime Minister, has accepted the resignation of Shri Dharmendra Pradhan from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution of India.”

The 63-year old Joshi who has earlier handled other key ministries such as coal and mines,  enjoys Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s confidence. He is also close to the RSS.  

Joshi will be expected to bring in major changes in the Indian education system while setting the right tone with the youth. Joshi is likely to put in place measures to bring in structural changes in the education sector which has now come under spotlight. Sources said the new minister may also look at other segments of the ministry including primary and secondar education blocks and their examinations.  

"His actions will be closely watched as he comes at a crucial juncture and there is expectation from to swiftly take actions that will somewhat help in damage control," a political analyst who did not wish to be identified said. 

Joshi is the Member of Parliament from Dharwad in Karnataka. 

Pradhan's Resignation

Earlier on Saturday, Pradhan tendered his resignation follwoing massive protests over the NEET-UG examination paper leak. The protests which started in the Capital finally spilled over to other cities as well.

Pradhan announced his resignation on ‘X’ saying that he was taking the decision keeping the future of students in mind.

Meanwhile, Modi assured strictest action against cuprits who have been involved in the paper leak scam.
