The Suspense Is Over: India To Host Commonwealth Games 2030 In Gujarat

The Games will be held in India after 20 years. Ahmedabad has been officially selected as the host. Now the next question--Will India win the bid to host Olympics 2036?

CWG Games, Olympics, Gujarat

Its official now! India will host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. The decision was taken at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, Scotland. However what is noteworthy is that India has already thrown its hat to host the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad as well.

The decision for Olympics 2036 is yet to be taken but in case India wins the bid, the two mega events will certainly place Gujarat as the sporting capital of the country while placing it on the global map.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, one of Asia’s largest multi-sports complexes, will serve as the main centre for the Commonwealth Games, while advanced infrastructure such as the Gujarat Police Academy at Karai and the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex will form strong supporting bases.

The central and state governments will prepare a modern transport network, state-of-the-art accommodation facilities, and a robust digital infrastructure well before 2030.

The sweeping reforms introduced by the central government—including the National Sports Policy 2025, the National Sports Governance Act 2025, and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill 2025—further strengthen this momentum.

Any international sporting event boosts economic activities and tourism of the region. Besides, infrastructure is another sector which gets a big push.

The CWG will be organized through coordination between the Centre, Gujarat government, and the Commonwealth Games Association of India (CGA India). Key representatives who delivered presentations at the General Assembly included Gujarat’s Deputy Chief Minister and Sports Minister Harsh Sanghvi, Sports Principal Secretary Ashwini Kumar, Union Sports Joint Secretary Kunlal, Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Banchha Nidhi Pani, and CGA India CEO Raghu Iyer.

Needless to say, India is thrilled with the decision.

Lets see who said what!

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya:

“The 2030 Commonwealth Games will symbolize India’s development story and our commitment to sports development. This occasion will reinforce the vision of Developed India 2047.”

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi:

“This is a moment of pride for both Gujarat and India. It is an honour and a responsibility. Ahmedabad is ready to welcome athletes from across the world.”

CGA India President Dr. P.T. Usha:

“We are grateful for the trust placed in us by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games mark 100 years and lay the foundation for the next century.”

Commonwealth Games In India For The Second Time

India will host the Commonwealth Games for the second time-- after 20 years. The Games were first held in Delhi in 2010, and now Ahmedabad has been awarded hosting rights for the second time.

India has been participating in the Games since 1934, with 56 member nations currently part of the event. Since 2002, India has consistently maintained its position among the top five countries in the medal tally. India achieved its best-ever performance at the 2010 Delhi Games, winning 101 medals.
