The Gujarat government on Monday appointed India’s former Education Secretary Anita Karwal as the chairwoman of the Gujarat Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), filling up the post that had been lying vacant since last November.
Karwal is a retired, 1988-batch IAS officer from the Gujarat cadre, who superannuated as the Education Secretary last year. Prior to that, she was the chairwoman of the Central Board of Secondary Education.
Before she went on central deputation, she was the Chief Electoral Officer of Gujarat and conducted the 2012 assembly polls and 2014 parliamentary polls in the state.
Previous Gujarat RERA chairman Amarjit Singh, a retired 1982-batch IAS officer from the Gujarat cadre who took charge in July 2018, had vacated office in November 2022, after the completion of his term. Subsequently, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was also filed in the High Court seeking direction to the state government to fill this key position.
RERA, formed under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016, regulates the real estate sector and also doubles up as an adjudicating body for speedy dispute resolution.
Karwal, who has authored several books, had also served as Ahmedabad Collector and had held various key positions in the state administration.
She is married to her batchmate and IPS officer Atul Karwal, who is the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
