Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Maruti Suzuki’s first-ever Battery Electric Vehicle plant in Mandal–Becharaji SIR, Gujarat, on Tuesday, and flagged off the company’s first Made-in-India electric SUV, the “e-Vitara.” Alongside, he inaugurated lithium-ion battery cell and electrode production, a major step in India’s “Make for the World” ambitions.

The PM proudly said that Indian-built EVs will soon carry the “Made in India” label to 100 countries. He added that it is the hard work and sweat of Indian workers that make a product truly indigenous. He also remarked that hybrid battery electrode manufacturing opens a new chapter in India–Japan friendship, which he described as “Made for Each Other,” marking a major step toward India’s global ambitions.

Recalling that the foundation stone of Suzuki’s Hansalpur plant was laid 13 years ago, PM Modi notedthat the plant is now entering its teenage years. He said Maruti Suzuki exports vehicles ‘Made in India’ to Japan and other countries, reflecting the trust between the two nations. Highlighting progress, he stated that due to various policies, electronics production has increased by 500 percent, while mobile phone manufacturing has grown by 2,700 percent compared to 2014.

Speaking about his upcoming visit to Japan, PM Modi said that the friendship between India and Japan is not only diplomatic but also cultural. Both nations see their growth in each other’s progress and extend mutual support. He added that the partnership, which began with Suzuki, has now expanded to the projects like bullet train.

On the occasion, Japan’s Ambassador to India, Keiichi Ono, said that after the Prime Minister’s inauguration, electric cars made in Gujarat will be exported to over 100 countries—a matter of pride and joy for both nations. He noted that the two projects launched today will play a vital role in the field of sustainable and clean mobility.

Notably, Suzuki’s Gujarat plant produces 7.5 lakh cars annually. On Tuesday, Japanese carmaker Suzuki Motor Corporation also announced plans to invest Rs 70,000 crore in India over the next five–six years to expand its operations in the country.
