In a late-night order issued on Wednesday, the Centre appointed the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), and the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
As per the notification issued, Sadanand Vasant Date, a Maharashtra cadre IPS officer of the 1990 batch, has been made the new chief of NIA. Date is succeeding Dinakar Gupta, who is scheduled to retire by the end of this month.
Date’s will hold the post till his superannuation, which is in December 2026. It may be important to note that NIA is a social anti-terror unit, which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Among the key changes, Rajeev Kumar Sharma, a 1990 batch IPS officer from the Rajasthan cadre, is named the next Director General of BPR&D, succeeding Balaji Srivastava, who is scheduled to superannuate by the end of March.
Sharma will hold the post till his retirement, which is slated for June 2026. BPR&D is a social unit for research and training under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Separately, Piyush Anand, a 1991 batch IPS officer of the UP cadre, has been made Director General of NDRF. He will succeed Gujarat cadre IPS Atul Karwal, who is set to retire on March 31st.
Anand, who was serving as Special DG in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), has been given a two-year tenure.
Importantly, all the names mentioned were cleared by the PM-headed Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
In another IPS-related order, the Centre has repatriated UP cadre IPS PV Ramasashtry to his parent cadre with immediate effect. He is likely to take over as the Police chief in UP.
In the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Centre has extended the tenure of Supriya Patil Yadav, Joint Director, for one year. She is a 2004 batch IPS of Maharashtra cadre.
