The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS). He will assume office from the afternoon of June 30, 2026, following the retirement of the incumbent Army Chief, General Upendra Dwivedi.

A distinguished officer of the Armoured Corps, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1986 after graduating from the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla. During a military career spanning nearly four decades, he has held several key operational, strategic and leadership positions across the Army.

Lt Gen Seth has commanded formations at every level, including an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the western theatre and a Counter-Insurgency Force in Jammu & Kashmir. As a Lieutenant General, he commanded the prestigious Sudarshan Chakra Corps and later served as General Officer Commanding (GOC), Delhi Area.

On promotion to Army Commander, he led both the South Western Command and Southern Command, becoming one of the few officers to command two operational Army Commands. He has also played a significant role in operational planning, force management and capability development.

Widely recognised for his contribution to military modernisation, Lt Gen Seth has held important appointments in Strategic Planning and Capability Development at Army Headquarters. His efforts have been instrumental in shaping the Army’s modernisation roadmap, force restructuring initiatives and integration of emerging technologies into military operations.

An accomplished military professional, he has excelled in higher military education and instructional appointments. He is a graduate of the Higher Command Course and the National Defence College, and has also attended the prestigious Command & Staff Course in Paris.

With extensive operational experience and a strong strategic outlook, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth is expected to steer the Indian Army through a critical phase of modernisation and transformation.
