The Government of India has appointed Rudra Gaurav Shresth, a 1999-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Türkiye. He is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran.
According to an official announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Shresth is expected to assume his new assignment shortly.
The appointment comes at a significant time in regional and global geopolitics. Türkiye occupies a strategic position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and plays a key role in regional security, trade, and international diplomacy. As a member of NATO and an influential regional power, Türkiye remains an important country in India’s broader foreign policy calculus.
Shresth brings extensive diplomatic experience, particularly in West Asia. During his tenure in Iran, he has been closely involved in matters related to energy security, regional connectivity, and strategic cooperation, including issues linked to the Chabahar Port project.
Diplomatic observers believe that assigning an experienced officer from a critical posting such as Iran to Türkiye reflects New Delhi’s focus on strengthening engagement with key regional players and managing complex geopolitical relationships.
The move is also expected to support efforts to expand cooperation between India and Türkiye in areas such as trade, investment, technology, tourism, and multilateral diplomacy.
