The government on Wednesday appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rakesh Aggarwal of 1994-batch from Himachal Pradesh Cadre as the Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Aggarwal is currently holding the post of Special DG in the anti-terror federal probe agency and was earlier assigned the role of interim chief of the NIA following premature repatriation of then DG of the agency Sadanand Date to his home cadre Maharashtra, where he took charge of the state’s Director General of Police (DGP).
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Aggarwal’s appointment as DG, NIA for a tenure up to August 31, 2028, the date of his superannuation, the Department of Personnel & Training said in the order.
Aggarwal is considered to be a seasoned counter-terrorism and internal security professional with extensive experience in handling complex investigations. In his current position SDG in the NIA, he has been associated with several high-profile cases involving terror financing, radicalisation networks and cross-border linkages.
Now with him at the helm of the NIA, Aggarwal is set to provide leadership at a time when the agency is engaged with an expanding mandate and increasingly sophisticated security challenges, which the country has been facing with every passing day.
Meanwhile, in a separate order, the government appointed 1990-batch Haryana Cadre IPS officer Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor as the chief of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and 1993-batch of West Bengal cadre IPS officer Praveen Kumar as the head of the Border Security Force.
Kapoor will succeed incumbent Kumar, who has been shifted to the BSF and he is currently working in his cadre state Haryana. He has been appointed DG, ITBP for a period up to October 31, 2026, the date of his superannuation, according to the DoPT order.
On the other hand Kumar has been appointed as the 4 DG BSF for a period up to September 30, the date of his retirement.
