Govind Mohan To Continue As Union Home Secretary

Govind Mohan, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, has been serving as the Union Home Secretary since August 23, 2024. Under the latest order, the extension has been granted beyond August 22, 2026, in relaxation of the provisions of Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958. 

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in the service of Shri Govind Mohan, IAS (SK:89), as Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, for a period of one year beyond 22.08.2026, i.e. up to 22.08.2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Continuity At The Helm Of India’s Internal Security

The extension ensures continuity in the leadership of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which is responsible for overseeing internal security, Centre-State coordination on law and order, disaster management, border management, and the functioning of Central Armed Police Forces.

The decision comes at a time when the Union government is handling several critical national priorities, including internal security, border management, and preparations for the upcoming nationwide Census and other major administrative exercises. 

Second Consecutive Extension

This is the second extension granted to Govind Mohan. His tenure had earlier been extended up to August 22, 2026, despite his superannuation date, and the latest order now allows him to remain in office for another year. 

About Govind Mohan

Govind Mohan is an IIT-BHU graduate with an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad and has held several key positions in the Government of India. Before becoming Home Secretary, he served as Secretary, Ministry of Culture, and earlier worked in senior roles within the Ministry of Home Affairs, including as Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary. He assumed charge as Union Home Secretary on August 23, 2024, succeeding Ajay Kumar Bhalla.
