Modi Government Bets On 'Technology Expert' Nandan Nilekani To Roll Out Examination Reforms

Following the resignation of Former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who came under severe criticism after the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak scandal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the setting up of the High-Powered Task Force on Exam Reforms.

“We should ensure that our exam system can be trusted, transparent and tech-savvy,” Modi said, adding that the “technology expert” Nilekani-led task force will focus on exam reforms.

Rather than limiting the reform exercise to education administrators, the government has assembled a multidisciplinary team that reflects the complex nature of the challenge. Besides Nilekani, the task force includes former ISRO Chairman S. Somnath, IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti, former Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, former School Education Secretary Anita Karwal, and logistics expert Amrit Lal Meena.

Nilekani’s New Challenge

The co-founder of Infosys, Nilekani, for sure enjoys the trust of the people. His appointment is widely seen as a strong indication that technology will form the backbone of the proposed reforms.

As the architect of Aadhaar and one of the pioneers of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), Nilekani has successfully led projects involving secure digital identity, authentication systems and the management of massive databases serving over a billion people. These capabilities have direct relevance to public examinations, where secure candidate verification, encrypted digital processes and minimising human intervention are increasingly seen as essential to preventing fraud.

Expertise In Digital Governance

Nilekani's experience extends beyond Aadhaar. He is the Co-Founder and Chairman of EkStep Foundation, a not-for-profit initiative focused on improving foundational literacy and numeracy through technology-enabled learning platforms. In 2023, he was appointed Co-Chair of the G20 Task Force on Digital Public Infrastructure for Economic Transformation, Financial Inclusion and Development, further cementing his reputation as one of the world's foremost architects of digital governance.

A graduate of IIT Bombay, Nilekani, who also received the Padma Bhushan, was recognised by TIME magazine among the World's 100 Most Influential People in AI in 2024.

This time round, the challenge is different: he will have to fix the deep-rooted malaise of the country’s education and examination system.

The moot question is: Will he be able to recreate the magic he earlier did with UIDAI?
