The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of two senior IPS officers as Joint Directors in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), strengthening the agency's senior leadership.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Atul Kumar Thakur, a 2008-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, has been appointed as Joint Director, CBI. He is currently serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the CBI. His appointment will take effect from the date he assumes charge of the post and will continue for an overall tenure of seven years up to November 24, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The ACC has also approved the appointment of Pankaj Kumar Singh, a 2008-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, as Joint Director, CBI. Singh is presently serving as DIG in the agency. His tenure as Joint Director will be effective from the date of assumption of charge and will continue for an overall tenure of seven years up to December 5, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The appointments were approved based on the proposal submitted by the Department of Personnel and Training, with the official order issued on July 13, 2026, by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. The move is expected to further strengthen the leadership structure of India's premier investigating agency.
