The government on Friday issued an order extending by nearly a year the tenure of Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, who was scheduled to superannuate on September 30.
The DoPT, in its order, said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in services of Govind Mohan, lAS (SK:89) as Home Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, beyond the date of his superannuation i.e. 30.09.2025 up to 22.08.2026 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in terms of the provisions of FR 56 (d) and Rule 16 (1A) of the All India Services (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.”
Mohan was appointed Union Home Secretary on August 14, 2024. He took charge on August 23. Earlier, he was the Union Culture Secretary.
In bureaucratic circles, Mohan is considered to be a brilliant officer, and is known for his diligence. He had earlier served in the MHA as Additional Secretary, when he handled several key divisions, including Union Territories and Border Management.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, he was one of the central officers who oversaw the implementation of various decisions and ensured smooth coordination with states. While serving as Union Culture Secretary, Mohan successfully launched two major flagship programmes of the government: "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" and "Har Ghar Tiranga".
Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is a key initiative of the central government to commemorate 75 years of India's Independence, as well as the glorious history of its culture and achievements.
During his tenure as Culture Secretary, the Har Ghar Tiranga movement saw people hoisting the national flag atop their homes, besides carrying out Tiranga Yatras and Tiranga rallies.
Mohan also held foreign assignments, working as Minister (Economic), Embassy of India, Washington DC, USA from July 25, 2012 to August 24, 2015, when he coordinated with selected ministries/departments of the Indian government with corresponding entities of the US government. During the period, he also facilitated dialogue between the commerce and industry chambers of India and the US.
Originally from Uttar Pradesh, Mohan served as the Union Culture Secretary from October 2021 to August 14, 2024.
