The Government has appointed four new members to the University Grants Commission (UGC), including Sridhar Vembu, CEO and founder of Zoho Corporation, and Ashish Kumar Chauhan, CEO and Managing Director of the National Stock Exchange (NSE). Shashikala Gulabrao Wanjari and Sachidananda Mohanty are the two other members who were appointed.
Wanjari is the Vice Chancellor of the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA), while Mohanty is a former vice-chancellor of the Central University of Odisha.
Chauhan, who is currently the CEO and MD of NSE, is a mechanical engineer from IIT Bombay and an alumnus of IIM Calcutta. He is considered one of the prominent experts in financial market policies and also serves as the chancellor of the University of Allahabad.
On the other hand, Vembu is the founder and CEO of Zoho Corporation, a Chennai-based company that develops computer software. Wanjari previously served as Vice Chancellor of SNDT Women's University in Mumbai, Maharashtra, while Mohanty has previously served as the Head of the English Department at the University of Hyderabad.
The Department of Higher Education issued the gazette notification of the appointment on April 10. The notification also stated that the new members would serve for a term of three years or "until further notice".
