Sujata Chaturvedi, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre and currently serving as Union Secretary for Sports, has been appointed as a Member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) by the President of India under Article 316(1) of the Constitution.
Chaturvedi, who is scheduled to retire on June 30, 2025, will assume her new role ahead of superannuation. Her tenure as UPSC Member will be for six years from the date she enters office or until she attains the age of 65, whichever comes earlier.
Before her current role in the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, she served as Additional Secretary (Establishment) in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). During her tenure in the Bihar cadre, she became the first woman IAS officer to hold the position of Principal Secretary (Finance). She has also served as Deputy Director General at the UIDAI.
The UPSC, which is responsible for conducting the prestigious Civil Services Examination among others, is headed by a Chairperson and can have up to ten members. The terms and conditions of appointment for members are governed by Article 316(2) of the Constitution and the UPSC (Members) Regulations, 1969, as amended from time to time.
