The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a nine-month extension in service for Special Protection Group (SPG) Director Alok Sharma (IPS: 1991 batch).

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Sharma’s tenure has been extended from July 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

The extension has been granted by relaxing the provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d) and the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefit) Rules, 1958. Sharma currently heads the elite SPG, which is responsible for the security of the Prime Minister and former Prime Ministers entitled to SPG cover.

In a separate notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the Central Government has extended the tenure of Meera Swarup, Technical Member of the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT).

Swarup, whose tenure had ended on March 9, 2026, has been granted an extension till September 8, 2026. The decision was taken under the provisions of the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021, and the Tribunal (Conditions of Service) Rules, 2021.

The extension ensures continuity in the functioning of the Securities Appellate Tribunal, which adjudicates appeals against orders passed by financial sector regulators, including SEBI.
