Santosh Kumar Sarangi Gets Additional Charge as SECI CMD Amid Leadership Shake-Up

The position fell vacant following the sudden removal of Gujarat cadre officer R.P. Gupta with immediate effect

In a sudden shift at the top of India’s solar energy agency, senior IAS officer Santosh Kumar Sarangi (OR:94) has been given additional charge as Chairman and Managing Director of Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI). The appointment comes after the abrupt removal of R.P. Gupta, a 1987 Gujarat cadre officer, just a month before his retirement.

As per the government’s notification, issued on Saturday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet ended Gupta’s tenure with immediate effect. His exit has raised eyebrows across policy circles, especially given his recent transition to SECI in June 2023. Before that, he served as Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in 2021. SECI functions under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Sarangi, from the 1994 Odisha cadre, now steps in to lead SECI—an institution critical to India’s renewable energy ambitions.
