Former Enforcement Directorate (ED) chief and retired IRS-IT (1984) officer Sanjay Mishra has been appointed as a full-time member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM) with the rank of Secretary. Earlier, this information was kept strictly confidential.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the appointment on Tuesday, March 25. The EAC-PM is an independent body that provides economic and policy advice to the Government of India.
Sanjay Mishra’s selection for this key position is unsurprising, given his close ties with the central government leadership during his tenure as ED Chief.
As ED Chief, Sanjay Mishra enjoyed significant trust from the central government. He was one of the rare bureaucrats—alongside former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Nripendra Misra—to have his term extended through an Ordinance.
Sanjay Mishra stepped down as ED Chief on September 15, 2023, following a Supreme Court ruling in July 2023 that permitted his extension until that date in the national interest.
