Revenue Department Promotes Four IRS Officers As CBDT Members

Pravin Kumar and Harinder Bir Singh Gil are from 1987 IRS batch, while Sanjai Kumar Verma and Ravi Agrawal, are a batch junior. The appointments have come after a huge delay as the first vacancy arose in September 2021

The Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance has elevated four senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers of Income Tax cadres as members of the Central Board of Direct Tax (CBDT), the highest policy making body for direct taxes in India.

The appointments have come after a huge delay as the first vacancy arose as early as September 2021. The CBDT, which is the administrative body of the Income Tax Department, comprises a chairman and six members, who are in the rank of Special Secretary.

Appointed to the board are the 1987-batch IRS officers - Pravin Kumar and Harinder Bir Singh Gil - Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax in Pune and Ahmedabad, respectively. They are joined by Sanjai Kumar Verma and Ravi Agrawal, their counterparts from Chennai and New Delhi, respectively, who are a batch junior.

They were among the 25 candidates interviewed by the Selection Committee of the Department of Revenue on June 9 and June 21, 2023.

With the new appointments, all the posts have been filled in the seven-member board. CBDT Chairman Nitin Gupta, a 1986-batch IRS officer of the Income Tax cadre, is also holding the charge of the crucial wing of investigation, which controls the Director General (DG) Investigations across all Income Tax offices in the country.

Gupta, who took charge in June 2022, is scheduled to retire in September 2024.

In 2021, the CBDT promoted IRS (IT) officer Subashree Anantkrishnan (1987 batch), and a year later her batchmate Pragya Sahay Saksena, as its members.
