RBI Dy Governor T Rabi Sankar Appointed Part-Time Member Of 16th Finance Commission

The Commission will submit its report in October this year

Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor, T Rabi Sankar, has been appointed as a part-time member of the 16th Finance Commission (FC). A notification issued on Saturday said that he will hold office from the date of assuming charge until the submission of the Commission's Report, or 31st October, 2025, whichever is earlier.

The appointment of Sankar is consequent to the resignation of AN Jha, who was earlier serving as one of the full-time members of the Finance Commission. Jha resigned on personal grounds.

The 16th Finance Commission was constituted in December 2023. The commission is led by Arvind Panagariya, the former Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog. The 16th FC is mandated to submit its recommendations by 31st October, 2025, for the award period of five years, commencing from April 1, 2026.

For the 16th FC, challenges are multiple as it has to delicately balance allocating and distributing resources among states.

The Finance Commission reports play a key role in settling the balance in the relationship between the Centre and the states.

In a way, it is an important pillar in the centre-state relationships, under the country's federal structure.
