RBI Approves Reappointment Of Atanu Chakraborty As HDFC Bank's Part-time Chairman

The former Economic Affairs Secretary served the Government of India for 35 years before joining the HDFC Bank board as part-time non-executive chairman and independent director. His second tenure will be for a period of three years, till May 2027

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved a second term for Atanu Chakraborty, a retired Gujarat cadre IAS officer, as part-time chairman and independent director of the HDFC Bank.

After the central bank’s nod, the HDFC Bank said in a statement that Chakraborty’s second tenure as part-time chairman and independent director will be effective from May 5, 2024 till May 4, 2027. 

Chakraborty is a former IAS officer of Gujarat cadre,1985 batch. He retired in 2020 from the post of Secretary, Economic Affairs, in the Union Ministry of Finance. Prior to it, he had also served as secretary in the Department of Investment and Public Assets Monetisation (DIPAM) in the Ministry of Finance. 

In Gujarat, he served as the Secretary, Economic Affairs, Additional Chief Secretary of Industries and Mines, and Managing Director of Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) and Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals (GSFC). 

Having retired after 35 years in service, he joined the HDFC group as the part-time chairman of HDFC Bank's board in May 2021, for a period of three years.
