Rajiv Gauba Gets One More Year As Cabinet Secretary, His Third Extension

Gauba has previously served as the Union Home Secretary and Secretary Urban Affairs and House in the Government of India and Chief Secretary of Jharkhand

In a precedent setting order, the Modi Government on Thursday given third one year extension to the Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, who has completed four years in office.

After the completion of his two year fixed tenure, Mr Gauba was given two one year each extension and now the third extension, which means he will remain in office till August 30, 2024.

Mr Gauba is a 1982 batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre.

He becomes the first officer to remain as the top bureaucrat, cabinet secretary, in the central administration for five years.

According to sources, the government has extended his tenure to maintain continuity till the next Lok Sabha polls.

In the official notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved extension of tenure of Mr Gauba for one year beyond August 30, 2023.

The government has relaxed the All India Services (AIS) (DCRB) Rules, 1958 and Rule 56(d) of the Fundamental Rules.

His predecessor PK Sinha and even his predecessor AK Seth remained on the chair for four years.

Mr Gauba was appointed on the top bureaucratic position of the country in 2019. He previously served as the Union Home Secretary and Secretary Urban Affairs and House in the Government of India and Chief Secretary of Jharkhand.
