The government, late on Monday evening, issued an order, appointing 1992-batch IPS officer Rajesh Nirwan as the new Director General of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), which is entrusted with the task of ensuring safety and security of civil aviation facilities across the country.
Nirwan, a Rajasthan cadre police officer, replaces Amrit Mohan Prasad, a 1989-batch IPS officer of the Odisha cadre, who is currently holding the post of Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) with additional charge of the DG, BCAS, since November 1, 2024.
Former full-time BCAS DG Zulfikar Hasan, a 1988-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, had superannuated from the service on October 31, 2024.
It is to be noted that the government made an inexplicable delay in appointing a full-time DG, BCAS, despite the hundreds of hoax bomb calls being reported during the past 2-3 months that set alarm bells ringing in the aviation sector.
In the order, the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Civil Aviation for appointment of Shri Rajesh Nirwan, IPS (RJ 1992) as Director General of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.”
Nirwan, who hails from Jodhpur, is a trained Chartered Accountant and MBA, and has done a course of Master in Police Management.
Soon after joining the service, Nirwan’s first posting was SP in CID (CB) Jaipur. He then served as the police chief of the districts of Jhalawar, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk and Kota.
He was promoted to Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2007, and had a two-year stint at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till 2009. He became Inspector General of Police in 2010, and took command of the Ajmer Range till 2012.
From October 2016 to October 2023, Nirwan held the post of Inspector General of Police and Additional Director General of Police in the Border Security Force (BSF) at its headquarters in New Delhi.
