With an aim to keep continuity in the Rail Bhawan administration, the Government has decided to extend the tenure of Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board, Satish Kumar, for a further period of one year, effective from September 1.
In an order issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) it is said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension in tenure of Satish Kumar, Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) (Retd.) as Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board for a further period of one year w.e.f. 01.09.2025, on re-employment on contract basis, on existing terms and conditions, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
On September 1, 2024, Kumar was appointed the first chairman and CEO from the Scheduled Caste category of the Railway Board.
Officials in the Rail Bhawan said Kumar, a distinguished officer of the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers, has made significant contributions to Indian Railways throughout his illustrious career spanning over 34 years.
In November 2022, Kumar was appointed the General Manager of North Central Railway, Prayagraj, marking another milestone in his journey of service with the country’s transport monolith.
Matching professional achievements, Kumar’s educational background is also distinguished. He completed his BTech in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, before pursuing a Post Graduate Diploma in Operations Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).
Kumar’s career in Indian Railways began in March 1988, and since then, he served in different divisions, zones and production units, including the Jhansi Division of the erstwhile Central Railway, the Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi, North Eastern Railway, Patiala Locomotive Works, Lucknow Division of Northern Railway, Jaipur Division of North Western Railway, and the North Central Railway, in various capacities.
“A significant contribution of Kumar is his work on the Fog Safe Device, an innovation that has proven to be instrumental in ensuring safe train operations during foggy conditions,” a senior official said.
Before being appointed as the Chairman and CEO, Kumar was holding the position of Member, Railway Board, looking after Traction and Rolling Stock, a key position that oversees the critical aspect of Indian Railways’ operations.
