Rahul Navin To Officiate As ED Chief; SK Mishra Demits Office

Rahul Navin is special director of the ED belonging to the 1993 batch of the Indian Revenue Service of Income Tax cadre

The Modi government on Friday appointed Rahul Navin as the acting director of the Enforcement Directorate in line with the Supreme Court’s deadline for the outgoing chief SK Mishra.

The apex court had allowed Mishra to continue till September 15.

According to insiders, Navin has been made the officiating director of the agency. He is special director of the ED belonging to the 1993 batch of the Indian Revenue Service of Income Tax cadre.

Mishra demitted the office today. However, according to the buzz in the top echelons of the power in the national capital, the Centre is reportedly considering appointing Mishra in a new set-up.

Insiders say Mishra may be placed in the Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB), which functions under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance.

According to the website of the Revenue Department, the CEIB was set up in 1985 and serves as the nodal agency for economic intelligence mandated to ensure effective interaction and coordination among all agencies in the area of economic offences.

It also functions as the clearing house of all economic intelligence and provides a platform for such exchange between various agencies within the Department of Revenue and other intelligence and enforcement agencies, including IB, RAW, CBI and ED.

The CEIB is headed by the special secretary-cum-director general who is assisted by three joint secretary-level officers, one of whom is designated as JS (COFEPOSA) and the other two are designated deputy director general (administration & coordination) and deputy director general of economic intelligence.
