The Punjab government has appointed 1992-batch IPS officer Gaurav Yadav as its Director General of Police (DGP), according to an official order issued by the Department of Home Affairs on 9 October 2026.

The appointment was made after the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) empanelled three IPS officers found suitable for the post of DGP (Head of Police Force), Punjab. The panel comprised Dr. Sharad Satya Chauhan, Harpreet Singh Sidhu and Gaurav Yadav.

After considering the UPSC panel, the Governor of Punjab approved Yadav’s appointment as the state’s regular police chief.

Yadav had been serving as the officiating DGP since July 2022. His appointment formalises his position as the head of the Punjab Police after more than four years in the role.

The government order states that his tenure will be for a minimum period of two years from the date of assumption of charge, in accordance with the Supreme Court’s judgments and directions dated 22 September 2006 and 3 July 2018, in the Prakash Singh & Others vs Union of India & Others case.

Bureaucratic Significance: The appointment highlights the role of the UPSC empanelment process and Supreme Court directives in the selection and tenure of state police chiefs. It also provides continuity in leadership at the top of the Punjab Police.
