The Government of India has extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood, IPS (Karnataka cadre: 1986), by one year beyond May 24, 2025.
The decision, dated May 7, was formally approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), following the recommendations of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
The official notification, signed by ACC secretary Manisha Saxena, confirms the extension and comes amid the committee’s inability to reach a consensus on a successor.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had chaired a high-level meeting of the ACC at the Prime Minister’s Office, which was attended by Chief Justice of India Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.
The three-member panel, constitutionally mandated to select the CBI chief, reportedly discussed the appointment of a new Director, but failed to arrive at a unanimous decision.
In light of the deadlock, the ACC opted to continue with the incumbent. Praveen Sood, who took over as CBI Director in 2023, will now remain in office until May 2026, ensuring continuity in the leadership of the country’s premier investigative agency.
The CBI Director is appointed for a fixed term of two years, extendable by the government based on recommendations from the ACC.
