The Union government on Wednesday reconstituted eight Cabinet committees that oversee and make key decisions with respect various aspects of governance and administration. Besides representation of BJP ministers, several ministers from partners of the National Democratic Alliance were inducted into these committees.
The government also renamed the Cabinet Committee on Employment and Skill Development. It will now go as the Cabinet Committee on Skill, Employment, and Livelihood, according to a notification released by the office of the Cabinet Secretary.
According to notification, the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, remains the same as it was during his previous tenure, since the Union ministers of Defence, Home, Finance and External Affairs have remained unchanged.
Eleven members were named to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), prominent additions to which included Union ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan, HD Kumaraswamy (Janata Dal-Secular) and Rajeev Ranjan Singh (JDU).
The strength of CCEA had dropped from 12 memebers at the start of Modi's previous tenure to eight members by the end of it as three ministers from alliance partners ceased to be part of it and one minister, Narendra Tomar holding charge of agriculture, resigned last November to contest state elections in Madhya Pradesh.
Union ministers Harsimrat Kaur Badal of Shiromani Akali Dal and Arvind Sawant of Uddhav Thackrey-led Shiv Sena quit after their respective parties severed ties with the BJP, while Ram Vilas Paswan of Lok Janshakti Party had passed away.
After Modi's return to power for a third term, two of the BJP's allies have found representation on the CCEA.
Other representations from alliance partners included Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Reddy (Telugu Desam Party) and MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi (Hindustani Awam Morcha) who have been inducted into the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs. Food Processing Minister Chirag Paswan (Lok Janshakti Party) has been inducted into the Cabinet Committee on Investment and Growth.
Prataprao Jadhav of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is a special invitee to the Cabinet Committee on Investment and Growth, while Jayant Chaudhury of Rashtriya Lok Dal is a special invitee to the Cabinet Committee on Skill, Employment, and Livelihood. Chaudhury is a minister of state with independent charge of skill development and entrepreneurship.
Prominent new faces from BJP included Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, among others.
