The Bihar government on Monday appointed Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s blue-eyed boy and 1991-batch IAS officer Pratyay Amrit as the state's next Chief Secretary, succeeding Amrit Lal Meena, an IAS officer of 1989-batch, who will retire on August 31.
Currently serving as Development Commissioner of Bihar, Pratyay Amrit is also Additional Chief Secretary of the Health and Disaster Management departments.
According to an order issued by the Bihar government’s General Administration Department (GAD), Amrit will serve as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Chief Secretary’s office, until he formally assumes the top post on September 1.
Known as one of Nitish's most-trusted bureaucrats, Amrit has been instrumental in spearheading several of the state government’s flagship infrastructure and public service initiatives. His close working relationship with the CM and long administrative experience are seen as key factors that went in his favour for his appointment to the coveted post.
Outgoing Chief Secretary Meena will complete exactly one year in office on August 31. He was appointed to the top post in the state on August 31, 2024, after Brijesh Mehrotra, an IAS officer of the 1989-batch, superannuated from the service.
