NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam’s Tenure Extended By A Year

Subrahmanyam, who previously served as the Commerce Secretary, took over as the CEO of the government’s apex economic thinktank in February 2023

The Union government has issued an order — extending the tenure of NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1987-batch from the Chhattisgarh cadre — by a year.

Subrahmanyam’s term was set to end on February 24. His extended term will now continue for a year more, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

In an order issued late night on Monday, the Department of personnel & Training (DoPT) said, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved extension in tenure of Shri BVR Subrahmanyam, lAS (CG-87) (Retd.) as Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog for a period of one year beyond 24.02.2025 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, on existing terms and conditions.”

Subrahmanyam, who previously served as the Union Commerce Secretary, took over as the CEO of the government’s apex economic think tank, NITI Aayog in February 2023, succeeding 1981-batch UP cadre retired IAS officer Parameswaran Iyer.

In his illustrious career spanning over three decades, he held several important assignments across Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jammu & Kashmir. He also had a brief stint as India’s representative at the World Bank.

Besides being Commerce & Industry Secretary, Subrahmanyam had also served as Chief Secretary in the J&K government, and Principal Secretary in the Chhattisgarh government. He also held positions in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), making him an important bureaucrat.

NITI Aayog is the top government thinktank that advises central ministries and states in formulating long-term policies on major economic issues, including efforts to evolve a shared national development vision, fostering cooperative federalism, and developing village-level plans.

It also makes sure that national security interests are incorporated into economic policies and pays special attention to socially disadvantaged groups in designing long-term policy frameworks for them.

It also promotes partnerships, knowledge sharing, and innovation, while monitoring and evaluating programme implementation, and providing a platform for resolving inter-sectoral issues.
