NCAER's First Woman Chief Poonam Gupta To Join As RBI Dy Governor

The announcement takes place just ahead of the RBI MPC meeting, slated next week

Poonam Gupta, Director General of National Council of Applied Economic Research has been appointed as Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India for a period of three years. The announcement has come just ahead of the monetary policy committee meeting slated between April 7-9. Gupta will come in place of Michael Debabrata Patra.

The post has been lying vacant since January 14 after Patra’s extended term ended.

Until now senior most Deputy Governor of RBI, M Rajeshwar Rao was overseeing the role.  

A member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, Gupta, the first woman to head NCAER, is also a member of the advisory council to the 16th Finance Commission. Previously, she served as the lead economist at the World Bank. Besides, Gupta was also a professor at Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations and Delhi School of Economics.

More recently, Gupta played a crucial role in the launch of the “NITI NCAER States Economic Forum” portal with a focus to carve out data of all states. The portal is expected help in framing sharper and informed policy decisions. 

As per the RBI Act, 1934, there are four deputy governors in the central bank. Of the four governors, two are from the central bank itself. That apart, of the other two, one is selected from the commercial banking space while the fourth deputy governor is typically an economist.
