Amid the ongoing electoral process -- the second phase of polling will take place on Wednesday, the government has extended the services of West Bengal's Director General of Police (DGP) Siddh Nath Gupta by six more months to ensure continuity in the administration of the police force. Gupta, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of West Bengal cadre, was scheduled to superannuate on April 30, 2026.
In a communication to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal Sanjeev Kumar, the Under Secretary in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which is the cadre controlling authority for the IPS, said, “I am directed… to convey the approval of the Competent Authority for extension in service to Siddh Nath Gupta, IPS (WB:1992), DG & IGP, West Bengal, for a period of six months beyond 30.04.2026, in relaxation of Rule 16(1) of AIS (DCRB) Rules, 1958, in public interest.”
Earlier in March, when the Assembly polls in West Bengal were announced, the Election Commission (EC) of India had effected major changes in the state bureaucracy and in the police administration, and had appointed Gupta as the new DGP of the state.
The decision of the EC to replace then-acting DGP Peeyush Pandey, a 1993-batch IPS officer, with Gupta, had marked a significant reshuffle in the state’s police leadership, reflecting the government’s focus on ensuring free, fair and secure elections.
Gupta is a seasoned IPS officer with decades of experience in West Bengal’s police department. Before taking over as the chief of the police force in West Bengal, Gupta was serving in the role of the DG & IGP of the Intelligence Branch (IB).
Throughout his career, Gupta has held several important positions, demonstrating expertise in intelligence, law enforcement, and administrative functions. He had also served as the chief of the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and led critical investigations in West Bengal since 2019.
Gupta is also an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, which underscores his strong analytical and strategic skills.
