MEA Additional Secretary Anurag Bhushan appointed as Ambassador to Sweden

Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Anurag Bhushan, Additional Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Sweden.

In the bureaucratic circles Bhushan’s posting in Stockholm is considered an important assignment, as both India and Sweden are engaged in the process of deepening their ties in the fields of innovation, sustainability and education.

In an order dated May 15, the MEA said, “Shri Anurag Bhushan (IFS: 1995), presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Sweden. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”

A 1995 batch IFS officer, Bhushan, considered a seasoned IFS officer, who is heading the Emigration Policy and Welfare (EP&W) Division of the MEA as Additional Secretary has led key initiatives in strengthening India’s labour and migration diplomacy, including co-chairing the India-Saudi Arabia Joint Committee Meeting on Labour Cooperation.

Many of his colleagues in the ministry are of the view that Bhushan’s long career in the foreign service reflects a thoughtful blend of policy insight and international engagements, across important postings.

Bhushan has a degree in Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and a postgraduate degree in Management from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad.

His illustrious academic feats provide foundation to equip him to navigate complex diplomatic challenges with clarity and strategic foresight. His administrative acumen has also been evident during his tenure as Regional Passport Officer (RPO) between 2010 and 2013.

It is also believed in the bureaucratic circles that his ability to provide steady leadership, his deep understanding of global affairs and commitment to public service, Bhushan is well-poised to elevate the relationship between the two nations and represent India’s interests with distinction.
