Justice Chandrakant Vasant Bhadang, a former judge of the Bombay High Court, has been appointed as the president of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), a quasi judicial institution dealing with appeals under the Direct Taxes Acts.

Justice Bhadang, who was elevated as a judge of the Bombay High Court in March 2014, retired from there in November 2022. Before his elevation at the high court, he had served in various positions in the judiciary in Maharashtra.

The ITAT was set up in January 1941 and its orders are final. An appeal lies to the high court only if a substantial question of law arises for determination.

Starting with six members constituting three benches, one each in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, the number of benches progressively increased and presently ITAT has 63 benches in 27 locations, covering almost all the cities having a high court seat.
