Jammu and Kashmir’s rivers are getting a new lease of life. With the Inland Waterways Authority of India setting up a regional office in Srinagar, the stage is set for a major shift in how people and goods move across the Union Territory. By introducing modernised waterways for Chenab, Jhelum, and Ravi—with jetties, navigation lights, and regular dredging—India is building a cleaner, cheaper alternative to road transport. This initiative promises eco-tourism, river cruises, floating hotels, and year-round ferry access. As infrastructure builds up, local communities are expected to gain from new trade routes, green jobs, and better connectivity. The rivers of J&K may soon flow with opportunity.
