IPS Officers Umesh Chander Datta And Love Kumar Appointed As IG’s In Special Protection Group

The PM-headed Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the names of two senior officials. The personnel department issued separate orders for their appointments on April 5

Two senior officers of the Indian Police Service (IPS), Umesh Chander Datta and Love Kumar, have been appointed as Inspector General (IG) in the elite force of the Special Protection Group (SPG). Datta is an IPS officer from the 2000 batch of the Rajasthan cadre, while Kumar is an IPS officer from the 2004 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre.

It is important to note that Kumar is currently serving as the Deputy Inspector General in the SPG. However, now he has been promoted to the post of Inspector General for a two-year term. On the other hand, Datta, who is serving his state cadre, has been given a term of five years and will be joining the SPG on a deputation basis.

The names of the two senior officials were approved by the PM-headed Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and on April 5, the personnel department issued separate orders for their appointments.

It is also noteworthy that IPS Alok Sharma of the UP cadre is the current chief of SPG, which is a special agency with nearly 2500 specially trained commandos and officials that oversee the security cover of the Prime Minister and his family.

The SPG chief reports to the Secretary (Security) in the Cabinet Secretariat, which is a post presently held by Swagat Das, a Chhattisgarh cadre IPS officer of the 1987 batch.
