The Maharashtra government on Thursday appointed 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rashmi Shukla as the Director General of Police soon after she was repatriated to the state cadre from the Centre.
Shukla, who was the Director General of the paramilitary force Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), has succeeded her batchmate Rajnish Seth after his retirement on December 31.
Even since she returned to the state cadre, her elevation to the post of the DGP was a foregone conclusion. In the Maharashtra cadre, she had served as Pune Police Commissioner and chief of the state CID.
Shukla had proceeded on central deputation during the MVA government when she was caught in a political feud between the then ruling alliance and the then main opposition BJP.
The MVA government had accused her of illegally tapping the mobile phones of their leaders.
The MVA had filed three FIRs against Shukla. Two of them were quashed by the Bombay High Court and the third was handed over to the CBI. The central agency recently filed a closure report in the case.
