India-Finland Ties Strengthen With New Consulate In Ahmedabad

Business leader Kulin Lalbhai named Honorary Consul to help drive Finland-Gujarat partnerships in innovation and trade

India-Finland Ties Strengthen With New Consulate In Ahmedabad

In a significant development, Finland is all set to open its Honorary Consulate in Ahmedabad on June 9, 2025. The move is expected to bring Finland and Gujarat closer together, opening up fresh opportunities for business, education, and cultural exchange. To mark the occasion, Finland’s Ambassador to India, Kimmo Lähdevirta, will visit Gujarat next week. He will be accompanied by a high-level business delegation and will meet the local leaders from government, industry, and academia.

This news comes at a time when a similar plan from the US has been stuck in the pipeline for over two years. Back in 2023, the Indian government approved a proposal to set up a US Consulate in Ahmedabad or nearby GIFT City in Gandhinagar to make the visa process easier for the state’s students and professionals. However, the project has not taken off given the changing political scenario in the US.

Finland, on the other hand, has kept things moving with the aim to enhance bilateral ties with India. The new consulate is expected to help both sides work more closely—especially in areas like sustainability, education, digital innovation, and trade—where Gujarat is already making a mark.

A key person behind this initiative is Kulin Lalbhai, a fifth-generation family business leader and Vice Chairman of Arvind Limited, who has been appointed as the Honorary Consul. His experience in steering digital and consumer businesses puts him in a great spot to connect Finland’s interests with Gujarat’s growing economy. He oversees new initiatives within Arvind Group’s consumer and digital businesses, including Arvind Fashions, Arvind Smartspaces, and Syntel Telecom.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Lalbhai said that there are strong opportunities for meaningful cooperation between Finland and Gujarat. "I am excited to take on this role. The strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and education in both regions creates a solid foundation. I look forward to accelerating our joint efforts in these areas," he said.

According to a press release, the Embassy of Finland in New Delhi views this Honorary Consulate as a big opportunity to build stronger economic ties and partnerships with Gujarat’s industries. Ambassador Lähdevirta noted that Gujarat’s leadership in industrial development, sustainability, and digital innovation makes it a natural partner for Finland.
