In a significant diplomatic reshuffle at a time of evolving geopolitical alignments in Europe, India has appointed Shri Ravi Shankar Indian Foreign Service, 1995 batch, as its next Ambassador to Hellenic Republic of Greece, the Ministry of External Affairs announced, signaling a renewed push to deepen strategic and economic ties with the Mediterranean nation. He is expected to assume his new responsibilities shortly.
Ravi Shankar holds a B.Tech degree and an MBA and brings with him nearly three decades of diplomatic experience. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in September 1995 and has since held a wide range of important assignments both at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi and at Indian missions abroad. Most recently, he assumed charge as Ambassador to Ukraine in August 2024, a role that placed him at the centre of a region marked by ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Over the years, he has served in different capacities at Indian missions in Paris (1997–2000), Tunis (2000–2004), Hanoi (2009–2012), and Rome (2013–2016), gaining extensive diplomatic and cross-cultural experience. He also served as India’s High Commissioner to Uganda from 2017 to 2020, where he contributed to strengthening bilateral relations and development cooperation.
At the Ministry’s headquarters in New Delhi, Shankar has held several key positions. He headed the Multilateral Economic Relations Division in 2020 and later served as Joint Secretary in the President’s Secretariat from 2020 to 2022. He subsequently took on the role of Additional Secretary in charge of Southeast Asian countries between 2022 and 2024. Earlier in his career, he also served as Chief Staff Officer to the Minister of State for External Affairs from 2006 to 2009, further consolidating his experience in policy and administration.
