In a major administrative reshuffle, the Government of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday appointed senior IAS officer Sanjay Gupta as the new Chief Secretary of the state with immediate effect.
According to an official notification issued by the Department of Personnel, Appointment-I Section, the Governor of Himachal Pradesh approved the appointment of Sanjay Gupta, IAS (HP, 1988), who was serving as Additional Chief Secretary (Town & Country Planning and Housing) and was also holding the additional charge of Chief Secretary.
The notification stated that the appointment has been made “in the public interest” and will take effect immediately.
The order was issued on May 26, 2026, from Shimla by Secretary (Personnel) M. Sudha Devi. Sanjay Gupta is considered one of the senior-most bureaucrats in the Himachal Pradesh cadre and has held several key administrative positions during his career.
His appointment comes at a crucial time when the state government is focusing on governance reforms, infrastructure development and administrative efficiency.
