Gujarat's Lithium Leap Charging India's Green Revolution?

Gujarat is rapidly transforming into a powerhouse of lithium battery manufacturing, consolidating its position as the frontline state of India’s tech-led industrial growth. At a Gujarat Legislative Assembly session, it was revealed that five lithium battery plants are operational in the state, with two more in the pipeline. In addition, one plant is undergoing expansion. These units are set to bring in a whopping ₹15,230 crore in new investment.

MLA Arjun Modhwadia shared that the currently operational plants have collectively amassed an investment of ₹5,705.7 crore. Leading the charge is TDS Lithium Ion Battery Gujarat Private Limited, which set up its first plant in Becharaji with an investment of ₹1,126 crore. Active since May 2021, this plant is currently undergoing expansion at an additional cost of ₹130 crore and is expected to be completed soon. Furthermore, the company has diversified its operations with a fresh investment of ₹4,406 crore. This new facility began functioning since June 2024.

Other key players include Tata Autocomp Goshan Green Energy Solution Private Limited, which have set up a plant worth ₹214 crore in Sanand. It has been operational since March 2023. Voltherm Innovation Private Limited’s Gandhinagar unit, worth ₹3.7 crore, commenced operations since September 2023. Exide Energy Solution Limited’s facility in Prantij, established for ₹170 crore, has been functional since December 2021. 

Gujarat’s lithium expansion doesn’t stop there. A massive ₹13,000 crore facility by Agartas Energy Storage Solution Private Limited is being built in Charodi, eyeing a December 2026 launch. Likewise, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions Private Limited is investing ₹2,100 crore into a Valsad-based facility, expected to be operational by March 2026.

With these advancements, Gujarat is not only leading India’s electric vehicle and renewable energy revolution but also attracting major investments, emerging as a global leader in clean energy storage solutions.
