As urbanisation accelerates across Gujarat, the state government is taking significant steps to enhance public transportation for city residents. After successfully launching metro rail projects in Ahmedabad and Surat, the government has now proposed similar metro systems for Vadodara and Rajkot. These new projects are currently under consideration by the central government and are expected to receive approval by the end of this year.
S.S. Rathore, Advisor to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Managing Director of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), informed The Secretariat that the second phase of the Ahmedabad Metro, which connects to Gandhinagar, is currently under construction and will extend service to Mahatma Mandir by the end of December.
Simultaneously, work has commenced on a 7.56 km circular route within GIFT City. The first phase of the Surat Metro is also on track for completion this year. Additionally, a 6.33 km metro extension aimed at connecting Ahmedabad Airport is progressing steadily.
According to Rathore, Phase 1 of the Ahmedabad Metro spans 40.03 km, while Phase 2 will cover 28.55 km. Of the 54 planned metro stations across both phases, 46 are already operational. In Surat, a 40.35 km route with 38 stations is currently under development. The combined expenditure for these three metro projects is estimated at ₹22,000 crore.
With approximately 52 per cent of Gujarat's population residing in urban areas, the state has prioritised metro rail as a modern public transport solution. Following Ahmedabad and Surat, detailed proposals for metro projects in Vadodara and Rajkot have been submitted to the central government. Approvals areanticipated by the year-end.
Rathore emphasised that majority of Gujarat's metro routes are being constructed as elevated corridors. The cost of building 1 km of elevated metro route is around ₹300 crore, while underground routes and stations cost approximately ₹550 crore/km. Tentatively, a 39.10 km route has been proposed for Vadodara and a 37.80 km route for Rajkot, although final alignments may undergo changes.
These initiatives underscore Gujarat’s commitment to transforming its urban infrastructure with world-class public transport solutions.
