Gujarat IPS Transfers Likely In First Major Reshuffle Under New Govt

Transfers of top-level IPS officers expected soon in the first-ever major reshuffle under the new state government headed by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel; Ahmedabad city likely to get a new police chief

The Gujarat government is likely to effect top-level changes within the Police department, in its first-ever major reshuffle after the new government took charge in January following the state assembly election held last year.

The putative shuffle would likely involve the transfers of top IPS officers at the Police Commissioner level to range IGs (Inspector General), DIGs (Deputy IGs), DCPs (Deputy Commissioner of Police, JCPs (Joint Commissioner of Police) and SPs (Superintendent of Police) at the district level.

Ahmedabad could get a new Police chief, two months after the superannuation of Sanjay Srivastava in April, following the expected reshuffle.

Currently, Prem Vir Singh, Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) in Ahmedabad city, is holding the additional charge of the City Police Commissioner.

Several names are rumoured for the coveted job, including Vadodara Police Commissioner Shamsher Singh and Additional DG (Intelligence) Anupam Singh Gahlot, who is also holding the additional charge of Director of the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB), the state’s anti-graft agency.

“Orders may be issued anytime this week,” a source told The Secretariat.

Surat’s current Commissioner of Police Ajay Kumar Tomar could be allowed to continue as he would retire in January 2024.

“Most of the range IGs or DIGs will be shifted along with the district SPs,” a source from Gandhinagar said.
