In a slew of appointment decisions, the government on Friday posted 2012-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Gujarat cadre Vishal Gupta as Private Secretary (PS) to Minister for Culture & Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The ministry gained more prominence in the last few years as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is pushing for further developing the tourism sector.
In the 10th Governing Council meeting of the Niti Aayog, Modi said underlined the need to focus on One State: One Global Destination. "States should develop at least one tourist destination per state at par with global standards and by providing all facilities and infrastructure." he said, adding that it would also lead to the development of the neighbouring cities as tourist places.
Besides Gupta, the government announced that 1990-batch IAS officer of Odisha cadre Sanjeev Chopra will be given additional charge of the post of the Secretary in the Ministry of Food Processing Industries. Chopra is currently holding the post of the Secretary in the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.
In an order issued on Friday the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) said, “… the Competent Authority has approved the proposal for appointment of Shri Vishal Gupta, IAS (GJ:2012) as Private Secretary to the Minister for Culture & Tourism (Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat) in the Ministry of Culture at the level of Deputy Secretary for the period of five years with effect from the date of assumption of the charge of the post or on co-terminus basis or till he ceases to function as Private Secretary to the Minister or until further orders, whichever event occurs the earliest.”
As part of the appointment order, the DoPT has instructed Gupta to take up his new assignment immediately.
In a separate order the DoPT said that Chopra has been given the additional charge of the Ministry of Food Processing Ministry as its Secretary following superannuation of Subrata Gupta, a 1990-batch IAS officer of West Bengal cadre on May 31, 2025. Chopra has been given the charge of his new assignment till the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever is earlier, it said.
Jinesh Mohan, an Indian Railways Store Service (IRSS) officer of 2014-batch, who was recommended for central deputation by the Ministry of Railways, has been selected for appointment as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Bio- technology under the central staffing scheme for a period of four years from the date of taking over charge of the post or until further orders, whichever event takes place earlier, the DoPT said in another order.
The Ministry of Railways has been requested to relieve Mohan immediately to allow him to take up his new assignment at the earliest, it said, adding that the officer should join the new office within three weeks from the date of issue of appointment order, failing which the process of debarment from the central staffing scheme shall be initiated.
