The government has extended the tenure of senior IAS officer Saurabh Garg as the Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), for another year till July 31, 2027.
According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension of Garg, a retired 1991-batch IAS officer of the Odisha cadre, on a contract basis for a further period of one year beyond July 31, 2026.
The order also said Garg would continue to discharge the functions of Secretary to the National Statistics Commission during the extended tenure.
This is the second consecutive one-year extension granted to Garg after his retirement. His tenure was earlier extended beyond July 31, 2025, for a year till July 31, 2026.
Garg first took charge of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on April 15, 2024, when he was entrusted with the additional responsibility of Secretary, MoSPI, while serving as Secretary in the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.
Subsequently, just weeks before his superannuation, the government appointed him as Secretary, MoSPI, up to his retirement on July 31, 2024. Following his retirement, he was reappointed on a contract basis for one year till July 31, 2025. That tenure was later extended till July 31, 2026 and has now been prolonged by another year.
With the latest ACC decision, Garg will continue to head the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation and oversee the functioning of the National Statistics Commission until July 31, 2027.
