Govt Appoints Ex-Navy Man CMD of MDL

Jagmohan is a trained ‘Naval Architect’ from Cochin University of Science & Technology. He obtained two post-graduation degrees from IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur, served the Indian Navy for 25 years, and held positions in Directorate of Naval Design

The government, on April 17, 2025, issued an order appointing Captain Jagmohan (Retd) as the new Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL).

He is a trained ‘Naval Architect’ from Cochin University of Science & Technology and did two M.Tech in Naval Construction & Ocean Engineering from IIT Delhi and IIT Kharagpur, respectively. He has also served the Indian Navy for 25 years and held several important positions in the Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai.

In the order, the Department of Personnel & Training (DOPT) said the decision to rope in Captain Jagmohan as the CMD of the MDL was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on the proposal of the Department of Defence Production.

Capt. Jagmohan is currently serving as Director of Corporate Planning, Projects and Business Development at the Goa Shipyard Limited, and his appointment has been made “in relaxation of the eligibility criteria”.

According to the DoPT order, Captain Jagmohan will be assuming charge of the post from the date of taking over and will continue until the date of his superannuation on September 30, 2029, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Department of Defence Production for the appointment of Capt (IN Retd.) Jagmohan, Director (Corporate Planning, Projects and Business Development), Goa Shipyard Limited, in relaxation of the eligibility criteria, to the post of Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in the scale of pay of Rs.2,00,000 3,70,000/- (IDA) for a period with effect from the date of his assumption of charge of the post till the date of his superannuation i.e., 30.09.2029, or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the DoPT said.

Before joining the Goa Shipyard Ltd as Director Corporate Planning, Project & Business Development, he was Chief General Manager (Design) at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd, Kolkata. 

As Head of Design at GRSE, he was responsible for the execution and management of the design of various complex Warship projects such as Advanced Stealth Frigate, P28 ASW Corvette, Survey Vessel, ASW Shallow Water Craft and Fast Patrol Vessels for the Indian Navy & Indian Coast Guard.
