Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), India’s first operational smart city and a leading international financial services centre, is broadening its focus areas through development projects, with the aim of integrating finance, technology, education, and lifestyle infrastructure into a single ecosystem. Several major projects launched this year are expected to strengthen its global positioning by 2030 significantly.

Flagship Development Projects

These flagship projects include metro connectivity, a riverfront development corridor, international universities, Centres of Excellence in artificial intelligence (AI), and more than 20 international-standard restaurants. An AI Centre of Excellence worth ₹100 crore has also been established. The Central government has also approved a ₹1,067 crore metro rail extension project connecting GIFT City to Shahpur, marking a shift towards vertical urban development in the city.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) is directly monitoring developments at GIFT International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), where international financial activities are expanding rapidly. Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary P.K. Mishra stated that GIFT City is evolving into a global financial infrastructure platform, helping bring international financial activities back to India and generating high-value employment opportunities.

Nearly 70% of India’s External Commercial Borrowings (ECB) are now being routed through GIFT City. The number of International Banking Units (IBUs) continues to increase.

According to GIFT City officials, Infosys is setting up a development centre with a capacity of 1,000 employees, while Wipro has recently inaugurated its new office.

GIFT City is also emerging as India’s primary hub for aircraft leasing. Global insurance and reinsurance companies have already established operations here, and new platforms are being developed for international equity listings.

Restaurants To Begin Operations

Addressing the IFSCA Talent Vista Summit–2026, Gujarat’s Minister of State for Home Affairs, Harsh Sanghavi, had announced that more than 20 international-standard restaurants will begin operations in GIFT City within a year. These facilities are expected to enhance lifestyle infrastructure, offer global culinary experiences to employees and visitors, and support the growth of the economy. He further stated that as part of strengthening the knowledge-driven ecosystem, FinTech research centres, AI research SPVs, global academic collaborations, and financial regulatory training programmes will also be introduced in the city.

GIFT City Chairman Uday Kotak said that it will play a critical role in achieving the vision of "Developed India 2047", adding that geopolitical stability, modern infrastructure, and an independent regulatory framework are the three major strengths driving GIFT City’s growth.

GIFT City Managing Director Sanjay Kaul stated that, so far, 71 buildings have been approved, of which 25 are operational, 37 are under construction, six are at the planning stage, and three are awaiting development permissions. Development rights have already been allocated for 29.45 million square feet of built-up area, approximately 50% of the planned 62 million square feet. The target is to allocate development rights for the entire planned built-up area by 2030.

Officials also stated that a traffic junction study is nearing completion, and electric taxi services are being planned to improve internal mobility.

Meanwhile, the Sabarmati Riverfront development is being extended up to GIFT City. A 4.5 km riverfront corridor is under development within the GIFT City area, featuring waterfront promenades, walking and cycling tracks, food plazas, parks, green zones, ferry services, and recreational zones.
