Geoeconomics: Bangladesh’s Crisis & India’s Role- Exports, Trade and Turmoil

After months of instability, Bangladesh’s trade with India is rebounding. But will rising exports be enough to stabilise the country?

Bangladesh has faced turmoil since Sheikh Hasina fled in August 2024, but despite political uncertainty, India’s exports to Bangladesh are bouncing back. After witnessing a steep decline in August, trade surged in October and November, with exports reaching $1,020 million during the festive season. However, connectivity issues, visa restrictions, and stalled Indian projects still remain as major challenges. In this episode of The Secretariat's Geoeconomics show, Shantanu Mukharji, security expert & former national security advisor to the Mauritius government, analyses the shifting political landscape. He discusses the role of General Waker-Uz-Zaman, and what rising exports mean for India-Bangladesh relations. Will trade help stabilise Bangladesh? Or will political unrest derail progress?
