Former SSIS Praveen Vashista Sworn In As Vigilance Commissioner

Before joining the CVC, Vashista took voluntary retirement from the service a week ago, paving way for the government to appoint him in the Central Vigilance Commission

TS BureauPraveen Vashista, the 1991-batch Bihar cadre Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, on Friday took oath as the Vigilance Commissioner in the probity watchdog Central Vigilance Commission (CVC). With him joining anti-graft body, the CVC will now have its full operating strength.  

Before joining the CVC, Vashista took voluntary retirement from the service a week ago, while being posted in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) as Special Secretary Internal Security (SSIS), paving way for the government to appoint him as the Vigilance commissioner.

The former IPS officer was set to retire on July 31, but now he will have four more years of tenure in the government, as the order issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) said, “The tenure of the Vigilance Commissioner is of four years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years.”

It said, “The Hon’ble President of India vide warrant dated December 12, 2025 and by virtue of the power vested under Section 4 (1) of the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003 has appointed Shri Praveen Vashista as Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission.”

The DoPT further said that Vashista “made and subscribed oath on 16th January 2026 as Vigilance Commissioner” before the Central Vigilance Commissioner PK Srivastava, who was authorised by the President of India in pursuance of the provision contained in Section 5 (3) of the CVC Act 2003.

Vashista has a distinguished career spanning over three decades, serving in diverse and important areas such as law enforcement, crisis response and security management. He has worked as IG of the Economic Offences Wing and Criminal Investigation Department of Bihar. As Superintendent of Police, he maintained law and order in critical Districts like Ranchi, Dumka and Garhwa. He has also served as SP and DIG in CBI.

On central deputation Vashista has held critical portfolios in MHA as Joint Secretary, Additional Secretary, OSD and Special Secretary (Internal Security).

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior officers of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Vigilance Commission.

Vashista’s expertise was honed during his tenure with the Economic Offences Wing and Crime Investigation Department of Bihar, as well as his service in the Central Bureau of Investigation.
