The redevelopment of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad — the iconic residence of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi — is currently underway with an estimated project cost of ₹1,200 crore.
Until recently, the project was overseen by former IAS officer K. Kailashnathan, who served as Chairman of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development Project. In a key leadership change, the Government of Gujarat has now appointed Dr. I.P. Gautam (Retd. IAS) as the new Chairman of both the Governing Council and the Executive Council overseeing the project.
Dr. Gautam brings decades of administrative experience to the role, having held senior positions across various departments in the state government. He is particularly well-regarded for his contributions during his tenure as Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad.
In addition to this appointment, the Gujarat government has also designated the Additional Chief Secretary or Principal Secretary of the Sports, Youth, and Cultural Activities Department as a member of both the Governing and Executive Councils of the project.
Notably, State Government has also resolved & approved the formation of The Mahatma Gandhi Sabarmati Ashram Memorial Trust (MGSAMT) as an autonomous body.
